President sets up Maldives Zakat House to strengthen zakat management
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially established the Maldives Zakat House under the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, in line with Article 11(a) of the Zakat Act.
With the introduction of the new legal framework, the Zakat House that previously operated under the Ministry of Islamic Affairs before the enactment of the Zakat Act has been dissolved and the newly established Maldives Zakat House will now function under the provisions of the Act.
The Zakat Act introduces a comprehensive system for the collection, management, and distribution of Zakat in the Maldives, in accordance with Islamic principles.
The law aims to ensure greater transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the handling of Zakat funds.
The Act was passed by the People’s Majlis and ratified by President Muizzu on 6 December 2025 and it officially came into force on 1 January 2026.
The President’s Office confirmed the formal establishment of the Maldives Zakat House through Directive No. 01/2026, marking a new chapter in the administration of Zakat in the country.
