Reopening of Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort and Spa

Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort and Spa in Addu City has officially reopened after remaining closed for several years, welcoming its first tourist since suspending operations during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Once regarded as one of the most prestigious and high-end resorts in Addu, the property resumed operations this afternoon, marking a significant milestone for the city’s tourism sector.

The resort had been closed since April 2020 following the global downturn caused by the pandemic. Later that year, in August, more than 500 employees were laid off, according to information previously released by the resort’s management.

The reopening is being widely welcomed as a major boost for the residents of Addu City, particularly in terms of employment and economic revival.

Government authorities undertook extensive efforts to facilitate the resort’s return to operations, including detailed negotiations with stakeholders.

As part of these efforts, the Ministry of Tourism conducted site visits to assess the condition of the resort, identify necessary repairs and upgrades, and explore viable pathways for reopening.

The required works have been carried out over the past several months, paving the way for the resort’s revival and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu inspected the progress of preparations to reopen as well.

With operations now resumed, the reopening of Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort is expected to generate new job opportunities for local residents and contribute significantly to strengthening economic activity in Addu City.
