Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has praised the Maldives for its compassion and swift support following the severe destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah and days of heavy rainfall across Sri Lanka.

Large areas of the country were inundated after the cyclone triggered flooding and landslides, resulting in extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

As Sri Lanka faced this difficult period, the Maldives moved quickly to extend assistance, with the government and media organizations jointly launching nationwide relief efforts.

In a message posted on X, President Dissanayake expressed gratitude to Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his condolences and commended the Maldivian people for their generosity.

He described the Maldives’ support as deeply reassuring to the Sri Lankan public, reflecting the strong and longstanding ties between the two neighbours.

I am grateful to President Muizzu for his kind message and for the generous support extended by the Maldives to Sri Lanka. The solidarity demonstrated by our neighbour has been deeply reassuring to our people and reflects the strength of our longstanding relationship,

The Maldivian government promptly pledged assistance on the same day the extent of the devastation became clear, donating USD 50,000 and 25,000 cases of canned fish.

The financial contribution was officially handed over yesterday, while the STO vessel carrying the canned fish has already arrived and docked in Sri Lanka.

Alongside government aid, the Maldivian public and private sector also mobilized in support.

A telethon organized by Maldivian media outlets raised MVR 11,553,291.10, USD 51,088.31, and EUR 20, reflecting an outpouring of solidarity with the Sri Lankan people.
