President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to present a special commemorative shield to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom tomorrow in honor of Victory Day.

According to the President’s Office, the recognition will be conferred upon former President Maumoon, the recipient of the Grand Order of the Distinguished Rule of Ghaazee (GODRG), as part of national efforts to honor his contributions to the nation.

President Muizzu has also decided to present commemorative shields to the families of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the 3rd November 1988 terrorist attack on the Maldives.

The presentation ceremony is scheduled to take place tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Social Center in Malé, during the official Victory Day Ceremony 2025.

In its statement, the President’s Office said President Muizzu’s decision reflects the government’s commitment to recognizing both former President Maumoon’s national service and the bravery of those who defended the country during the 1988 attack.

During the ceremony, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will deliver a national address, while Minister of Defense Hon. Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon is also scheduled to speak.

On November 3, 1988, nineteen Maldivians were martyred in a terrorist attack orchestrated by a small group of Maldivians and Sri Lankans, marking one of the most tragic events in the nation’s history.
