Landing Craft Capsizes at MPL Harbor, One dead, Six injured

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard has launched operations following the capsizing of a landing craft near the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area in Malé this afternoon.

According to MNDF, the incident occurred when a landing craft carrying fourteen people ran aground and overturned outside the MPL port area.

The Coast Guard Second Squadron and MNDF Malé Area Command were immediately deployed to the scene after receiving the report.

Police confirmed that they received information regarding the accident at 15:44.

Officers from the Police Marine Unit are currently operating in the area to assist with rescue and investigation efforts.

Authorities have reported that six individuals are being treated for injuries at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), while one foreign national has died as a result of the incident.

Among the injured is a 25-year-old Maldivian male, whose condition is reported to be serious.

The exact cause of the capsizing remains unclear at this time.

However, authorities noted that similar incidents involving vessels capsizing have previously resulted in extensive damage.

During the recent monsoon storms, another landing craft capsized, claiming the lives of one Maldivian and two foreigners.
