Maldives and EU reaffirm commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation

The Former President and Special Envoy of the President of the Maldives, Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan, met with Olof Skoog, Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs at the European External Action Service (EEAS), on the sidelines of the Global Tourism Forum Annual Meeting 2025.

During the meeting, Dr Waheed reaffirmed the Maldives’ strong commitment to good governance, democracy, and sustainable development. 
He also conveyed his appreciation for the European Union’s longstanding partnership and continued support to the Maldives in key areas, including governance, security cooperation, and institutional strengthening.

Mr Skoog, in turn, underscored the importance of regional peace and stability, highlighting its broader significance for the European Union. 
He also expressed optimism about expanding avenues of collaboration between the Maldives and the EU through multilateral engagement.

Concluding the discussion, both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening Maldives–EU relations and advancing mutual interests and global priorities.
