Maldives, EU discuss sustainable fisheries and trade at Global Tourism Forum

Special Envoy of the President and former President, Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan, met with the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, on the sidelines of the Global Tourism Forum Annual Meeting 2025.

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between the Maldives and the European Union in key areas of mutual interest, particularly sustainable fisheries and trade.

Dr. Waheed underscored the central role of the fisheries sector in the Maldivian economy and stressed the importance of ensuring fair market access to create a level playing field for Maldivian fish exports.

Both sides highlighted the shared commitment to promoting sustainable fisheries management and addressing challenges posed by illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Concluding the discussions, the Special Envoy and the Commissioner reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the enduring Maldives–EU partnership in pursuit of mutual growth and sustainable development.
