A 37-year-old man with a long record of arrests has been taken into custody in Malé for allegedly stealing a laptop.

The suspect, identified as Safwan Ali, of Lucky House, Th. Thimarafushi, was arrested by police on Thursday on suspicion of theft and unauthorized use of private property.

According to the Criminal Court, Safwan was remanded in police custody for 10 days following his arrest.

Court documents indicate that police recovered the stolen laptop from Safwan and his alleged accomplice.

The police also submitted CCTV footage and the incident report as evidence in the case.

The court order cited inconsistencies between Safwan’s statements at the scene and those made during his remand hearing as grounds for continued detention.

Records show Safwan has been arrested over122 times in connection with theft and robbery cases.

Previous arrests include incidents involving the theft of a bag from an individual in the Rasfannu area late last year, a robbery involving a foreign national, and several other theft-related offences.
