Landing craft tragedy claims two lives, one person remains missing

Maldives Coast Guard conducts rescue and recovery operations around the capsized landing craft

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has recovered a second body following the capsizing of the landing craft Almark Fiya, which was traveling from Malé to Eriyadhoo.

The body was retrieved from the seabed during ongoing search operations, MNDF confirmed on social media.

The craft had seven people onboard when it capsized amid rough weather conditions. Of the three individuals initially reported missing , a Maldivian, a Sri Lankan, and an Indian national two bodies have now been recovered, while one person remains missing.

The first deceased has been identified as Ahmed Shifan, 38, a Maldivian crew member from GDh. Dhaandhoo, Sarusoonu.

The second body recovered has not yet been identified.

Authorities continue to urge residents and travelers to exercise caution, stay updated with weather reports, and avoid unnecessary sea travel, as rough conditions persist in the region.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing for the remaining missing person.
