Maldives, Malaysia strengthen academic ties through IIUM engagement
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held discussions on Sunday with the Rector of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Osman Bakar, to explore ways to enhance collaboration in higher education, particularly in doctoral-level programmes.
The meeting, held at the President’s Office as part of the Rector’s courtesy visit to the Maldives, focused on strengthening academic ties between the two countries through institutional partnerships and research cooperation.
President Muizzu expressed his appreciation for IIUM’s continued support to Maldivian students pursuing higher education in Malaysia.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to broadening educational collaboration and exploring new opportunities for joint initiatives.
The visit builds upon the longstanding relationship between the Maldives and IIUM.
During President Muizzu’s official visit to Malaysia in April 2024, the university conferred upon him an Honorary Doctorate in Islamic Leadership and Civil Development in recognition of his contributions to Islamic leadership and governance.
The meeting concluded with mutual interest in advancing academic exchange and fostering long-term cooperation in the field of education.
