Malaysia Airlines commences operations from VIA’s new terminal

Malaysia Airlines has officially commenced operations from the new international passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), marking another milestone in the phased opening of Terminal 1.

A special ceremony was held today to celebrate the airline’s inaugural operation from the new terminal.

The event was graced by the Managing Director of Island Aviation Services, Ibrahim Iyas, and attended by Ahmad Hanam, the Station Head of Malaysia Airlines in Malé, along with senior officials and representatives from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and Malaysia Airlines.

During the ceremony, Malaysia Airlines inaugurated its new check-in counters and presented special gifts to the 170 passengers traveling on its outbound flight.

The first Malaysia Airlines aircraft to arrive at Terminal 1 — flight MH485 received a ceremonial water salute upon arrival.

Passengers disembarking from the flight were warmly welcomed with traditional Maldivian cultural performances.

Malaysia Airlines is the 10th carrier to begin operations from Terminal 1.

Other airlines currently operating from the terminal include Maldivian, Air Arabia, Beyon, Fits Air, Beijing Capital Airlines, Batik Air, Bangkok Airways, IndiGo, and Gulf Air.

According to MACL, the addition of Malaysia Airlines aligns with the company’s commitment to delivering world-class facilities and comprehensive services to all airlines operating to and from the Maldives.
