Maldives secures seat on UN-GGIM-AP executive board for first time

Maldives has been elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP) for the term 2025–2028.

Director General of Geomatics at the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Mohamed Shafee, was selected to represent the Maldives during the 14th plenary session of the UN-GGIM-AP, held today in the Republic of Korea.

His appointment was confirmed through consensus among committee members.

Shafee will serve alongside representatives from Armenia, Australia, Fiji, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, and Tonga.

This marks the first time the Maldives has joined the Executive Board, which comprises 15 members including two Co-Chairs and three Vice-Chairs.

The Board plays a pivotal role in coordinating the overall functions of the Committee.

Through its membership, the Maldives is set to contribute actively to advancing geospatial cooperation and strengthening regional collaboration in the Asia-Pacific.

The UN-GGIM-AP is the regional body tasked with leading, coordinating, and supporting the development and management of geospatial information across Asia and the Pacific.

Operating under the global UN-GGIM framework, it aligns its work with international standards and consists of 56 member states.
