Customs seize 1.8 million cigarettes in Addu smuggling bust
Maldives Customs has seized more than 1.8 million cigarettes that were being smuggled into the country.
According to officials, the massive haul was discovered during a search operation of a shipment that arrived in Hithadhoo, Addu City.
Customs stated that the duty applicable on the seized items is estimated to be around MVR 15 million.
Authorities confirmed that an investigation into the case is currently underway to identify those involved in the smuggling attempt.
In recent months, the government has significantly increased the duty on tobacco products, particularly cigarettes.
This move, while aimed at discouraging smoking and raising state revenue, has also led to a rise in smuggling activities, as well as manufacturing and trafficking of illegal cigarettes across the Maldives this year.
Officials said that preventing smuggling is a top priority, as illegal cigarette trafficking not only undermines state revenue but also poses public health and law enforcement challenges.
