Authorities have arrested two Bangladeshi nationals in Hulhumalé as part of an ongoing nationwide operation targeting illegal immigration, unlawful businesses, and crimes committed by foreigners.

The joint operation, carried out by the Maldives Police Service, Maldives Immigration, and Maldives Customs Service was first launched on September 22 and is being conducted in three phases.

During a search of residences suspected of harboring undocumented migrants, officers seized a large stock of cigarettes and tobacco packets, along with significant amounts of Maldivian Rufiyaa and US dollars believed to be proceeds from illegal sales.

Police identified the arrested individuals as MD Shamim Mia, 37, and Alauddin, 22, both Bangladeshi nationals.

The operation involved 13 police officers, supported by three immigration officers and three customs officers.

Authorities confirmed that the crackdown will also focus on individuals and groups who facilitate or support foreigners in conducting illegal business activities.

The case is currently under investigation.
