The first passenger lounge at Velana International Airport’s (VIA) new terminal has officially opened, marking another milestone in the expansion of the country’s main gateway.

Named “Koveli”, the lounge was inaugurated yesterday by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Managing Director Ibrahim Mohamed Shareef, at a ceremony held in the departure area of the new terminal.

Also in attendance were MACL Deputy Managing Directors Mujuthaba Latheef and Mohamed Lamaan, members of the company’s executive committee, officials from the Economic Ministry, and airline representatives.

In a statement, MACL highlighted the critical role of tourism, travel, and hospitality in sustaining the Maldivian economy, describing VIA as the pillar that holds all these industries together.

The company also praised its workforce for their dedication in developing and maintaining the airport, calling their efforts a service to the nation.

Located on the second floor of the new terminal, the Koveli lounge spans 1,230 square metres and has the capacity to accommodate up to 270 passengers.

It is equipped with modern amenities including a children’s play area, buffet service, shower facilities, baby care rooms, and spaces designed for passengers with special needs.

The new terminal itself was inaugurated on July 26, in conjunction with Independence Day celebrations, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the Maldives’ aviation and tourism infrastructure.
