A Sri Lankan worker sustained serious injuries after being struck by a lorry while working near an excavator in Thilafushi this afternoon, police have confirmed.

The incident was reported at around 2:15 p.m., after the man was run over by the lorry. He was rushed to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé, where he remains in critical condition.

According to police, the lorry was driven by an Indian national who has since been taken into custody.

The vehicle involved in the accident has been towed from the scene.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Further details have not yet been released.
