STO to import and supply 23 new essentials nationwide before october 15
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has expanded the Maldives’ essential food list, adding 23 new products in a major move to strengthen food security and ease pressure on household budgets.
The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade announced that the new additions include a variety of fruits, vegetables, beans, eggs, and potatoes, broadening the previous list that was limited to rice, sugar, and flour.
With this expansion, the total number of essential items has risen to 26.
The State Trading Organization (STO) has been tasked with importing, storing, and distributing these products across the country at affordable prices.
According to the government, the full rollout will be completed by 15 October 2025, ensuring that Maldivians can access a wider range of basic food items at fair market rates.
Speaking at a joint press conference on Thursday, Economic Development Minister Mohamed Saeed and STO Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim assured that STO is already working to stabilize prices, beginning with apples and oranges, which will reach the market ahead of schedule.
The official date agreed is 15 October. However, apples and oranges will be available continuously from next week
MD Shimad said
noting that shipments are currently being brought from South Africa and Egypt due to high domestic prices.
Minister Saeed reiterated the administration’s commitment to affordability:
October 15 is the date on which STO will ensure that these 23 items will be available in Maldives. That is the President’s goal.
Minister Saeed stated
This work is aimed at ensuring that people get goods at cheap prices, and there is no doubt it will be achieved when it is done through STO
He added
The cabinet has already approved the import of 10 fruits, 10 vegetables, as well as beans, eggs, and potatoes under the initiative.
Officials confirmed that STO will intervene immediately if the prices of these essential items rise sharply in the market.
