Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer is currently on an overseas trip, as members of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) forced their way into the Finance Ministry headquarters on Monday, demanding a meeting with him.

The protest, which began earlier outside the ministry, escalated after MDP Parliamentary Group members attempted to enter the building but were initially blocked by police.

Demonstrators cited concerns over the recent appreciation of the US dollar, delayed government payments to businesses, and a perceived lack of transparency regarding the country’s economic situation.

Despite police efforts to contain the protest, MDP members eventually overwhelmed security and entered the ministry.

Officials confirmed that Minister Zameer was not in the Maldives at the time.

The MDP has previously staged similar demonstrations, including at the Maldives Monetary Authority, seeking to meet the central bank governor.

The party has formally requested that the Finance Minister be questioned on the economic issues raised.
