A pickup truck overturned in a traffic accident on the highway connecting Malé and Hulhumalé via the Sinamalé Bridge on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the incident occurred around 12:40 pm after one of the pickup’s tires burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle crashed into the road dividers and also collided with a nearby car.

While the car sustained only minor damage, the pickup was severely damaged in the accident.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, including to the driver of the pickup.

Police noted that the vehicle had been travelling above the speed limit at the time of the accident, and action will be taken against the driver.

The accident is currently under further investigation.

The crash also damaged the road dividers on the highway.

Authorities have repeatedly raised concern about the frequency of accidents in the Malé area, some of which have resulted in fatalities and serious injuries in recent years.
