Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on an official state visit to the Maldives, described India-Maldives relations as “as deep as the ocean” while delivering a joint press statement with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, marking the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence and diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Speaking at the event held yesterday, Prime Minister Modi said the longstanding bond between the two neighbours transcends history, describing them as not just neighbours but “fellow voyagers on a shared journey.”

This year also marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives. However, the roots of our relationship are older than history itself and is as deep as the ocean

He stated

His comments came as both leaders jointly released a commemorative stamp depicting traditional boats from both nations a symbolic nod to their maritime heritage and enduring friendship.

In a show of continued support, Modi announced a new USD 565 million Line of Credit from India for infrastructure projects aligned with national priorities of the Maldives.

He also highlighted key initiatives already underway including the Greater Malé Connectivity Project, Hanimaadhoo International Airport redevelopment, and the Addu Road Project — calling them transformative for economic and transit activity in the region.

Reaffirming India’s role as Maldives' “First Responder” in times of crisis, Modi reflected on past cooperation during natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.

For us, it is always friendship first,

PM Modi stated

The Prime Minister also noted that discussions are progressing on a Bilateral Investment Treaty and Free Trade Agreement to deepen economic integration, while the adoption of UPI and local currency settlements are already facilitating trade in Indian Rupees and Maldivian Rufiyaa.

A defence ministry building supported by India was inaugurated during the visit which Modi described as a “concrete symbol of trust” along with announcements of enhanced cooperation in maritime security through the Colombo Security Conclave and future collaboration in climate resilience and weather science.

Prime Minister Modi concluded his statement by extending his warmest congratulations to the people of Maldives, affirming that India

will stand with Maldives at every step on its path to development and prosperity
