Maldives has established greenhouses across 12 islands in the northern atolls as part of its broader push to promote climate-resilient agriculture.

This effort is being carried out under the Maldives Agribusiness Programme (MAP), a joint initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

The project aims to strengthen local food production through the introduction of climate-smart and sustainable farming practices.

So far, 11 out of the 12 newly established greenhouses are operational, with farmers trained to cultivate crops such as cucumbers, melons, peppers, and capsicums.

The islands where greenhouses have been developed include:

Haa Dhaalu Atoll: Makunudhoo, Neykurendhoo, Nolhivaranfaru, Vaikaradhoo

Haa Alifu Atoll: Kelaa, Uligam, Molhadhoo, Filladhoo

Shaviyani Atoll: Narudhoo, Goidhoo, Foakaidhoo

In Narudhoo, the Ministry recently conducted a comprehensive training programme in greenhouse farming for local farmers.

The sessions combined practical skills with theoretical knowledge, equipping participants with modern agricultural techniques designed to improve yields and reduce environmental vulnerability.

The MAP initiative spans 26 islands in total across the three northernmost atolls Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, and Shaviyani and seeks to transition communities from traditional subsistence farming to more commercially viable and sustainable agribusiness practices.
