Fainu accident: Two children off ventilators, teacher still critical
Two children injured in the serious traffic accident in Raa Atoll Fainu have been removed from ventilator support but continue to receive intensive care, according to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
A school teacher injured in the same incident remains in critical condition and is still on ventilator support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The update was confirmed by IGMH to Voice, following the accident that took place on the night of June 26.
The incident occurred when an unlicensed student riding a motorcycle struck two pedestrians who were exercising.
At the time of the crash, two schoolchildren were riding the motorcycle.
Among the victims were the principal and a teacher from Fainu School.
All four individuals involved sustained varying degrees of injuries.
They were initially treated at Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital before being transferred to IGMH in Malé on June 27 for advanced care.
Eyewitnesses and local residents stated that the motorcycle was traveling at a high speed at the time of the collision.
Police have since confirmed that the vehicle involved in the incident has been towed, and an investigation is currently ongoing.
