Landing craft accident claims life of long-serving MNDF officer
A Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) landing craft capsized in the Kaashidhoo Channel early Monday morning, claiming the life of a long-serving soldier.
The vessel, identified as LC 308, belonged to Sifainge Welfare Company Pvt Ltd (SIWEC), a subsidiary of the MNDF.
It was en route to Lhaviyani Atoll when it overturned at approximately 1:30 a.m.
On board were five individuals: two MNDF personnel, one local civilian, and two expatriates.
The deceased has been identified as Warrant Officer Class Two Ali Hamid, a veteran MNDF officer from Th. Hirilandhoo who had served the military for 27 years.
He was recovered from the sea by the Coast Guard First Squadron during search efforts and was later pronounced dead at Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital.
Following the tragic incident, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu extended his condolences to the bereaved family and the MNDF community.
He expressed profound sorrow over the loss and praised the late officer’s long-standing dedication to national service.
The cause of the capsizing remains unclear, and authorities are continuing their investigation.
