Police reveal reason behind release and re-arrest of Raudh
Raudh Ahmed Zilal, who was arrested in connection with the case of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, foundseriously injured on the rooftop of a warehouse in Malé in the early hours of Friday, April 18, has been re-arrested shortly after his unexpected release from custody.
Yumnu was found after reportedly attending a party with at least eight others at Ma. Maandhooge Dhekunuge, the family residence of Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen, where authorities believe that drugs and alcohol may have been consumed at the gathering.
Raudh was initially arrested at 18:20 on April 24 and produced before the Criminal Court, which ordered a five-day remand.
An additional 10-day remand was granted following the expiry of the first, and another 20-day extension was approved on May 15.
However, Raudh was released from custody early this morning before the current remand period had expired, due to procedural requirements that needed to be completed.
He was re-arrested later in the day under a new court order.
His lawyer had filed an appeal with the High Court to overturn the remand order.
However, Raudh submitted a motion to withdraw the appeal after his release from custody.
The High Court dismissed the appeal following this motion with the dismissal publicly revealing for the first time that Raudh had been released.
His re-arrest followed shortly after news of his release was reported in the media.
