Minister Ihusaan defends police conduct in Yumnu case, dismisses calls for resignation
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has stated that the Maldives Police Service has not committed any wrongdoing in the case involving the fall of 21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu onto a warehouse rooftop in Malé last month.
Speaking on the “Ahaa” forum last night, Minister Ihusaan responded to a public question regarding the delay in arresting all suspects linked to the incident.
He assured that the police are actively investigating the case and emphasized that earlier social media reports about the incident were inaccurate.
No irregularities have been identified in their (Police) handling of the matter
Minister Ihusaan stated
He added that the police are adhering to established procedures and standards throughout the investigation.
Addressing growing public concern and calls for his resignation, Ihusaan asserted that resignation would only be appropriate if evidence emerged that police misconduct had gone unpunished.
The case has sparked widespread public and media scrutiny, particularly over the police’s initial communication about the incident.
However, police issued detailed updates later and launched a dedicated portal on May 8 to provide case information and gather public input.
In addition, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu established a special commission of inquiry on April 27 to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case.
Yumnu was discovered injured on the rooftop of a warehouse in Malé on the morning of April 18, and the incident has since drawn national attention.
