Judiciary committee endorses dismissal of two Supreme Court Justices
The Parliament’s Judiciary Committee has voted in favor of the Judicial Service Commission’s (JSC) recommendation to dismiss Supreme Court justices Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir, amid ongoing misconduct allegations.
The decision was made during a closed-door session held on Sunday afternoon.
The matter will now be forwarded to the full Parliament, where a two-thirds majority vote will be required to finalize their removal from the bench.
The controversy stems from actions taken by the JSC on February 26, when Justices Azmiralda and Mahaz, along with then-Justice Husnu Al-Suood, were suspended pending an investigation.
While Suood later resigned in protest of the suspension, the JSC moved forward with separate misconduct proceedings against Azmiralda and Mahaz.
The commission accuses the two justices of attempting to improperly influence judges at the Criminal Court.
The case marks one of the most high-profile disciplinary actions taken against members of the Maldives' top judiciary in recent years and has sparked widespread legal and political debate.
