Japan grants USD 2.8 Million to boost Maldives Coast Guard Operations
The Government of Japan has extended a grant of 400 million Japanese Yen (approximately MVR 43 million) to enhance the operational capacity of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard.
An Exchange of Notes formalizing the grant was signed today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Ishigami Rumiko, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Through this grant assistance, Japan will provide mobility equipment to the Coast Guard, including two harbor crafts.
The vessels are expected to significantly bolster maritime surveillance, environmental protection, and emergency response capabilities across the Maldivian archipelago.
The multi-role vessels are set to be deployed for maritime patrols in areas vulnerable to illicit activities such as smuggling, human trafficking, and illegal fishing.
They will also support search and rescue (SAR) operations and contribute to the protection of marine ecosystems through inspection and enforcement tasks.
This initiative marks a major step forward in strengthening the Maldives’ maritime security infrastructure and enhancing the Coast Guard’s ability to respond swiftly to threats and emergencies at sea.
The Maldives and Japan continue to enjoy close and friendly relations, with Japan remaining a key development partner through ongoing support in areas such as infrastructure, health and maritime security.
