Maldives and Malaysia ink key agreements to deepen bilateral cooperation
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, currently undertaking his first official visit to Malaysia at the invitation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, witnessed the signing of several key agreements today, aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two countries.
An official welcoming ceremony was held on Monday morning at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya, where President Dr. Muizzu was formally received by Prime Minister Anwar.
The ceremony was followed by official talks between the two leaders.
Ahead of a joint press conference, the Maldives and Malaysia signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering a range of critical sectors.
The agreements signed include:
Sports Development: Signed by Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel and Malaysia’s Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh.
Healthcare Cooperation: Signed by Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel and Malaysia’s Minister of Health Dr Haji Dzulkefly Ahmad.
Tourism Development: Signed by Maldives’ Ambassador to Malaysia Mariyam Shabeena and Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Tourism Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan.
Diplomatic Training: Signed by Maldives’ Ambassador to Malaysia Mariyam Shabeena and Malaysia’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohamad Alamin.
Bilateral Consultations: Signed by Maldives’ Ambassador to Malaysia Mariyam Shabeena and Malaysia’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohamad Alamin.
During the subsequent press conference, President Dr. Muizzu highlighted that the agreements lay a strong foundation for further strengthening the partnership between the Maldives and Malaysia.
He expressed optimism about expanding collaboration across multiple sectors in the future.
President arrived in Malaysia on Sunday, accompanied by a high-level government delegation.
His official visit is scheduled to conclude on April 30, 2025, upon which he will return to the Maldives.
