Maldives inaugurates embassy in Türkiye, marking new era in bilateral relations

The Republic of Maldives has officially inaugurated its Embassy in the Republic of Türkiye, marking a significant milestone in the longstanding diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The inauguration ceremony, held today in Ankara, was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, alongside Türkiye’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, and the Maldivian Ambassador to Türkiye, Lieutenant General (Retd) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef.

The event featured a flag hoisting ceremony and was attended by Chairperson of the Maldives-Türkiye Interparliamentary Friendship Group, Honourable Dr. Ümmügülşhen Öztürk, senior officials from Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, members of the Turkish business community, representatives of the local media, embassy staff, and members of the Maldivian community residing in Ankara.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Khaleel emphasized that the establishment of the resident diplomatic mission reflects the strengthening ties and growing cooperation between the Maldives and Türkiye.

He expressed confidence that the new embassy will serve as a vital platform for deepening bilateral relations, advancing economic cooperation, and promoting cultural exchange and people-to-people connections.

The Embassy will also play a key role in delivering consular services to the increasing number of Maldivians residing in Türkiye, while supporting the implementation of the Maldives’ foreign policy objectives.

In his remarks, Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy highlighted the enduring and cordial relationship between the two nations, founded on mutual respect and sincerity.

He noted that the bilateral partnership has flourished over the years across diverse sectors including tourism, culture, economy, and education.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Türkiye were first established in 1979, and the inauguration of the embassy represents a new chapter in their shared history of cooperation and friendship.
