Velana International Airport (VIA) celebrated its 59th anniversary today with a series of commemorative events organized by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), highlighting the airport’s rich history and its ambitious path toward future expansion.

The day began with a flag-hoisting ceremony attended by MACL management, employees, and various stakeholders.

Speaking at the ceremony, MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef expressed his appreciation to the Maldivian government and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for their continued support and commitment to the development of the country’s primary international gateway.

Shareef emphasized that 2025 will mark a year of significant transformation for VIA, as the airport prepares for rapid expansion in services.

He noted that ongoing major infrastructure projects will be instrumental in elevating the airport’s service quality, with contractors completing key facilities and MACL employees playing a vital role in operationalizing them.

He also took the opportunity to thank MACL employees for their dedication and contribution to the nation’s progress.

Following the formal ceremony, the celebrations continued with a symbolic unity walk and the cutting of a 59-foot cake.

The anniversary festivities will extend into the evening with a gala night and a one-day handball tournament.

VIA, located on Hulhulé Island near the capital Malé, traces its origins back to 1960 when it was merely a small airstrip.

In 1966, then-President Ibrahim Nasir inaugurated a newly constructed asphalt runway, built with the help of government efforts and local volunteers and welcomed its first tourists in 1972.

Today, VIA stands as a crucial hub for the Maldives’ tourism-driven economy.

Currently undergoing a mega development project, the airport is set to unveil a new international passenger terminal capable of handling 7.5 million passengers annually.

The upgraded terminal will feature aero-bridges, modern baggage systems, and expanded retail, food and beverage outlets, as well as premium lounges.
