The Maldivian Parliament has approved the appointments of two non-resident ambassadors, former Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General (Retired) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef as the Non-Resident Ambassador to the Russian Federation and Ahmed Sareer as the Non-Resident Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu nominated both candidates, and their names were submitted to Parliament for approval.

In today’s parliamentary session, Abdul Raheem’s appointment to Russia was endorsed with 65 votes in favor, while Sareer’s appointment to Morocco was approved unanimously with 64 votes.

Abdul Raheem previously served as the Chief of Defence Force and was appointed as Chief of Army Staff by President Dr. Muizzu.

He retired from the post in April 2024.

Before this new diplomatic role, he also served as the Maldivian Ambassador to Turkey.

Ahmed Sareer brings extensive diplomatic experience, having previously served as the Maldives’ Foreign Secretary, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Ambassador to the United States.

The Parliament had also recently approved his appointment as the Non-Resident Ambassador to the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Egypt.
