Russian Ambassador criticizes former Pres. Nasheed’s support for Maldives’ UN vote on Ukraine
The Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Levan S. Dzhagaryan, has strongly criticized former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed’s remarks regarding the country’s vote on Ukraine at the United Nations.
During a UN vote on Monday, the Maldives voted in favor of Ukraine, aligning with the European-backed resolution calling for a "comprehensive, just, and lasting peace" and the withdrawal of Russian military forces.
Nasheed expressed his support for this decision, stating on X,
I'm very proud of Maldives for voting with Ukraine at the UN yesterday. It was curious to see the United States align itself with Russia and North Korea. I'm glad Maldives found the courage and foresight to vote with the European countries and plain common sense.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed wrote
In response, Ambassador Dzhagaryan expressed his surprise at Nasheed’s comments, stating,
I was perplexed to see the post by Mr. Mohamed Nasheed where he claims to be proud for Maldives which voted with Ukraine at the UN on February 24. It raises questions how such an experienced politician couldn’t catch new growing trends towards peaceful resolution of Ukrainian conflict. While the US is moving to a more pragmatic and realistic approach, Mr. Nasheed prefers following outdated European aggressive position and militaristic rhetoric

The ambassador also highlighted Russia’s economic contributions to the Maldives,
I would like to remind Mr. Nasheed that it’s Russian tourists (not Ukrainians) who inflate the budget of Maldives during their stay on this marvelous archipelago. I humbly expect Mr. Nasheed to express gratitude for such support to his nation.
