President Nominates Zahid as Chairman, Salah as Vice Chairman of Elections Commission

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Mohamed Zahid as the Chairman and Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed as the Vice Chairman of the Elections Commission (EC).

A letter seeking parliamentary approval for their appointments was submitted on January 26 and was read in Parliament on Monday morning.

The nominations have been forwarded to the Independent Institutions Committee for further review.

Both Zahid and Salah were officially appointed as EC members on January 26, following their unanimous parliamentary approval on January 16, where they each secured 68 votes.

Zahid previously served as the Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) until his dismissal in 2020.

He also held the position of Deputy Minister at the Gender Ministry. Meanwhile, Salah has extensive experience within the EC, having previously served as its Secretary-General.

He also worked as the Permanent Secretary at the Home Ministry.

Their appointments come after two former EC members, Vice President Ali Nashath and Mohamed Asif, were dismissed in November last year through no-confidence motions in Parliament.
