The Maldives is set to introduce a modern digital ID card system, ensuring that access to personal information will require the explicit consent of the cardholder, according to Home Minister Ali Ihusaan.

Speaking at a forum aired by state-run media following President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s presidential address, Minister Ihusaan stated that the digital ID services, integrated into the e-pass system, are being designed to uphold international security standards while safeguarding personal data.

He emphasized that both government institutions and private sector entities will need user approval before accessing an individual’s ID card or related personal information.

The system adheres to global standards. If a private entity or service provider wishes to access the information, they must first obtain the individual’s consent. Moreover, users will have the ability to review who accessed their information and for what purpose, ensuring greater transparency and security

Minister Ihusaan stated

The introduction of the digital ID card aligns with President Dr. Muizzu’s vision for modernization, reinforcing privacy protections while streamlining identification processes across various services.
