Maldives Police Service raided an apartment in Henveiru, Malé, on suspicion of illegal cigarette manufacturing.

The operation was conducted under a court order after authorities received a tip-off regarding the production of tobacco products inside the premises.

The raid took place at H. Hulhugali, an apartment previously linked to high-profile cases.

The residence, known as the home of former state official Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, was also searched 12 years ago over allegations of operating a massage parlour.

During the latest operation, police were seen removing boxes from the apartment and transporting them in a police vehicle.

However, authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the findings.

Under Article 10 of the Tobacco Control Act, the manufacture of tobacco and tobacco products in any quantity is strictly prohibited in the Maldives.

The law defines tobacco products as any substance containing tobacco, nicotine, or related compounds intended for consumption.

The raid comes amid a surge in demand for tobacco products following the government’s decision to increase duties on cigarettes and bidi from October 31 last year.
