Maldives to revive Thakandhoo’s historical landmarks and promote cultural tourism
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to protect the historical sites in HA. Thakandhoo and develop the island as a cultural tourism destination.
The announcement came during his visit to Thakandhoo on Wednesday as part of his ongoing tour of HA. Atoll.
During the visit, President toured key heritage sites, including the tomb of Ali Thakurufaanu—a national hero who died fighting against the Portuguese—and the Great Cemetery, home to two coral stone mosques and nearly 1,000 pairs of ancient gravestones.
Speaking at a rally in Thakandhoo, President emphasized the island’s historical significance and its crucial role in preserving the Maldives’ national identity.
The cemetery constructed with coral stone. I believe this is among the largest cemeteries. This is a place with high historical and heritage value,
He stated
We have written it in our policies that Thakandhoo needs to be given attention at a national level.
He added
He highlighted that Thakandhoo is among a handful of islands requiring immediate protection under his administration’s heritage conservation policy.
The government plans to launch a project focused on restoring and safeguarding historical landmarks, ensuring they are preserved for future generations.
According to President Dr. Muizzu, the initiative will bring two major benefits: it will encourage historical research and create new tourism opportunities for Thakandhoo.
He noted that cultural tourism has the potential to attract history enthusiasts from around the world, making it a viable economic opportunity for the island.
If these sites can be protected and the stories behind them shared, it will be a great opportunity for tourists who have a love for history. If we can tap into this and expand tourism, it will be a valuable investment opportunity
He stated
President also revealed that the Thakandhoo Council has expressed keen interest in the initiative.
