Authorities have launched an investigation into the smuggling of 200 master cartons of Manchester cigarettes from the vessel M.T. Hawks Javaahiru, which were reportedly brought into the country on October 25, 2024.

The case is being jointly investigated by the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives Customs Service.

In a statement released today, police confirmed that the contraband was offloaded at The Hawks Company boatyard jetty in Thilafushi.

The investigation is focused on charges of smuggling and money laundering.

The Hawks Company has denied any involvement in the illicit operation, stating that certain employees had misused company resources for personal illegal activities.

The company also confirmed that it had launched an internal probe, taken action against those responsible, and is fully cooperating with authorities.

Meanwhile, the Parliament’s Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee) has initiated its own inquiry into the matter.

The committee has decided to compile two reports—one assessing The Hawks Company's potential involvement and another examining financial transactions and the companies linked to the case.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the committee has summoned Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, and Commissioner of Customs Fathimath Dhiyana for further clarification.

Investigations remain underway.
