First ever study on causes of youth crime to be conducted nationwide
Ministry of Homeland Security & Technology has decided to conduct a study to find out the reasons why children commit crimes.
The ministry told the state media company PSM that the reason children commit crimes in Maldives has not been identified yet and no scientific study has been conducted on the issue.
Therefore, the Ministry is conducting a study to identify the causes of crime among children. The main objective of this study is to protect children from a criminal environment and to identify the factors that facilitate such crimes in the society.
The study will not only identify why children are exposed to crime, why they go there and what is the most trending among children, but also take steps to bring children who go into crime at an early age back into society, the ministry said.
The ministry is working with UNICEF to secure funding for the study, which is being conducted in collaboration with the Islamic University of Maldives and is a nation wide study.
