President Dr. Muizzu concludes historic visit to Estonia
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has concluded his official visit to Estonia, marking the first-ever visit by a Maldivian head of state to the Baltic nation.
Invited by His Excellency Dr. Alar Karis, President of Estonia, this milestone trip focused on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring avenues for cooperation in digital governance, climate resilience, and education.
During the visit, President Dr. Muizzu engaged in high-level discussions with Estonian leaders, including President Dr. Karis, the President of Parliament, and senior ministers.
These talks centered on key areas of collaboration, particularly Estonia’s expertise in digitalisation, e-governance, renewable energy, and climate change.
The leaders also discussed opportunities for knowledge sharing in cybersecurity, sustainable development, and academic exchange.
Three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the visit:
1. An agreement on cooperation in climate change, environment, and energy.
2. A pact on political consultation between the foreign ministries of both nations.
3. A partnership for collaboration in homeland security and digital affairs.
President Dr. Muizzu also toured prominent institutions showcasing Estonia’s technological and cultural advancements.
These included the University of Tartu, known for its global excellence in research, the Estonian Biobank, a leading research facility in genomics; and Greenergy Data Centers, a model of sustainable digital transformation.
Cultural engagements were also a highlight of the visit.
President Dr. Muizzu explored the Estonian National Museum in Tartu and met with the city’s mayor to discuss smart city solutions.
Estonia’s commitment to innovation and sustainability served as an inspiration for the Maldives’ ongoing efforts in digital governance and climate resilience.
Concluding the trip, President Dr. Muizzu shared his gratitude on his official X account, calling the visit a "new era of bilateral cooperation."
He emphasized that Estonia’s digital transformation serves as a benchmark for efficient and transparent governance, which his administration aims to implement in the Maldives.
The President extended heartfelt thanks to the government and people of Estonia, particularly President Dr. Karis, for their warm hospitality and support throughout the visit.
