Chinese foreign minister pledges faster progress on Maldives’ development projects
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu hosted Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, during a courtesy call at the President’s Office this evening.
President Dr. Muizzu extended a warm welcome to Minister Wang Yi and expressed gratitude for the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and China.
He commended China’s continuous support for the Maldives’ development agenda, reflecting on his state visit to China in January last year as a milestone in elevating bilateral ties.
Highlighting the importance of expediting infrastructure projects agreed upon in prior Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), the President urged prioritization of social housing and road development initiatives, which he described as critical to addressing the immediate needs of the Maldivian people.
He also underscored his administration’s commitment to economic diversification, particularly in agriculture and fisheries, and sought China’s partnership in advancing these key sectors.
Minister Wang Yi lauded President Dr. Muizzu’s leadership and vision for development, calling him a trusted friend of China.
He affirmed China’s dedication to supporting the Maldives’ sustainable growth and assured expedited implementation of pending development projects.
Minister Wang also reiterated the Maldives’ support for the One-China Principle and highlighted the partnership as a model of effective collaboration between nations, regardless of size, for shared prosperity.
The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the China-Maldives Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership and enhancing cooperation on multilateral platforms to promote mutual progress and a shared future.
