Civil court orders Adeeb to pay MVR 1 million
The Civil Court has ordered former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to pay MVR 1 million within a month in connection with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) fraud case.
The decision comes after Adeeb failed to pay the full amount of compensation previously mandated by the Criminal Court.
In October 2020, the Criminal Court sentenced Adeeb to 20 years in prison and directed him to pay MVR 2 million to the Government within two months.
Despite the ruling, Adeeb did not settle the payment in full.
Following the lapse of the initial deadline, the Civil Court has now instructed him to pay MVR 1 million as part of the outstanding amount.
Adeeb’s legal counsel argued that paying MVR 1 million in a single installment was challenging.
The MMPRC scandal, which amounts to approximately MVR 4 billion, is regarded as one of the largest corruption cases in the Maldives’ history.
A significant portion of the stolen funds allegedly went missing from the Economic Council, which was then chaired by former President Abdulla Yameen.
Ahmed Adeeb served as the council’s co-chair during this period.
In October 2015, after the MMPRC scandal came to light, President Yameen removed Adeeb from his position as Co-Chairman of the Economic Council and placed the council’s affairs under his direct supervision.
Though Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the case, he was later pardoned by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
