President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called for a stronger and more capable Maldives Police Service, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public trust and protecting the country's reputation nationally and internationally.

In a message marking Maldives Police Service Day, President Dr. Muizzu extended greetings and best wishes to former and serving police officers and personnel.

The President said strengthening the police service is essential to maintaining the confidence and respect of Maldivian citizens, visitors to the country, and the international community.

He urged officers to continue serving the nation with dedication, courage, diligence, and sincerity.

Police services were first introduced in the Maldives in 1933.

For decades, policing and military functions operated under a single service before the police was established as a separate civilian institution on September 1, 2004.

Police Service Day is observed annually on September 1 to mark the establishment of the Maldives Police Service as a civilian institution.

The first law specifically governing the police service was enacted in 2008, while legislation introduced in 2020 established a framework based on modern community policing.

Over the past 22 years, the Maldives Police Service has expanded in response to changing social and security needs.

The Government has also announced plans to establish police services on every inhabited island.

The expansion forms part of broader efforts to strengthen law enforcement and improve access to police services across communities throughout the Maldives.
