Mohamed Mauroof Jameel named HDC MD as Fazul steps down amid allegations
The Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) has appointed former construction minister Mohamed Mauroof Jameel as the managing director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
The announcement was made on Sunday morning, a day after Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, the corporation’s former MD, resigned amid allegations of corruption.
The PCB confirmed that Fazul’s resignation was accepted and that Mauroof would assume the role effective immediately.
Mauroof, an architect and an independent researcher specializing in Maldivian architectural heritage, previously served as the minister of construction and public infrastructure during the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
His appointment comes at a time when HDC is under scrutiny for alleged corruption related to the allocation of housing, including land and apartments in Hulhumale’.
Last Wednesday, leaked documents circulated on social media suggested that multiple individuals were granted land under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme despite not being listed as eligible recipients in 2023 during the tenure of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government.
One of the individuals implicated in the controversy is Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, deputy managing director of Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and the older brother of former HDC chief Fazul.
In response, Fazeel was suspended along with the entire board—except for Chairman Ahmed Nasif—and at least four senior officials within the corporation.
Authorities have further imposed a travel ban on 24 individuals, including Fazul and Fazeel, as investigations into the allegations continue.
