The Parliament has approved the appointment of former Elections Commission (EC) President Fuad Thaufeeq as the Maldives Ambassador to Thailand.

The decision received overwhelming support, with 58 members voting in favor.

President Dr. Muizzu had nominated Fuad for the ambassadorial position on November 25.

Following the nomination, the Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee endorsed the appointment last Tuesday.

Fuad recently concluded his tenure as the President of the Elections Commission on November 23, after serving two consecutive five-year terms—the maximum allowed under current regulations.

He is recognized as the longest-serving member of the Elections Commission and is widely regarded as the most experienced individual in the field.

Fuad's career in the commission began in 2008, a pivotal year that marked the introduction of political parties and the first multi-party elections in the Maldives.

He was appointed as EC President in 2021, following the resignation of the then-chairman, Ahmed Shareef.

Fuad's extensive experience and long-standing service are expected to bring valuable expertise to his new role as the Maldives Ambassador to Thailand.
