Minister of Agriculture Dr. Rameela resigns amid cancer battle
Dr. Aishath Rameela, the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, has tendered her resignation due to ongoing health challenges stemming from her battle with cancer.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu confirmed her resignation in a statement issued on Sunday.
The President expressed his gratitude for Dr. Rameela’s dedication and praised her for her unwavering contributions to the government despite her illness.
He highlighted her efforts in promoting the rule of law and fostering prosperity for the Maldivian people.

The President described Dr. Rameela as an active and capable member of the Cabinet and expressed confidence that she would continue to contribute to the nation in the future.
He also acknowledged her achievements and her hard work as the inaugural Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, a role she assumed on November 17, 2023.
Dr. Rameela, who holds a PhD in Social Sciences, has had an extensive career in public service.
Beginning as a nurse in 1990, she later served twice as the State Minister of Health.
Last November, she revealed on Facebook that she had been diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer and was undergoing treatment abroad.
The President’s Office has yet to announce her replacement.
The president further stated that he remain proud to have appointed someone as dedicated and hardworking as Dr. Rameela to the Cabinet and that she has his deepest appreciation for her valuable service to the government.
The President also prayed for her swift and full recovery and assured his continued support during her challenging time.
