Nationwide project for decentralization of Passport and ID Card services launched to improve accessibility
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated a project to decentralize passport and ID card issuance services, fulfilling a key presidential pledge.
The launch ceremony, held at the President’s Office, was attended by head officials from relevant government authorities.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, emphasized the significance of the initiative, describing it as a cornerstone of President Muizzu’s policy agenda.
He stated that decentralizing ID card and passport services is a vital step toward improving accessibility for citizens.
The minister highlighted the challenges faced by previous governments in expanding these services, particularly in safeguarding information security.
He assured that the current government has addressed these concerns with meticulous planning, ensuring secure and well monitored systems to support the new services.
The project launched today will begin offering services in six locations.
Passport issuance will be available in Hulhumalé Phase 1 and 2, as well as in Dh. Kudahuvadhoo and L. Fonadhoo.
Additionally, ID card issuance will be launched in Hulhumalé, Villimalé, and Kulhudhuffushi.
The government has set an ambitious timeline to complete the nationwide rollout of decentralized passport and ID card services by the end of next year.
