COP29: President Dr. Muizzu unveils Maldives' early warning vision at UN climate event

At a high-level United Nations event focused on "Delivering Early Warnings for All and Addressing Extreme Heat," at COP29 President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu outlined his nation’s comprehensive early warning and resilience strategy, highlighting the urgency of climate action for vulnerable island communities.

President Dr. Muizzu emphasized

Thanking the UN Secretary-General for prioritizing the Maldives in the "Early Warnings for All" initiative, President Dr. Muizzu described the country’s pioneering approach as the first nation to adopt a national strategic roadmap aligned with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Our roadmap is not just a plan on paper – it is a call for action that leaves no one behind,

He stated

The Maldives’ 20-year National Development Plan prioritizes climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and advanced early warning systems.

Among key initiatives, President Dr. Muizzu highlighted the development of a disaster loss database to track climate-related damages and the implementation of impact-based forecasting, which will enable communities to take timely, targeted action.

He further explained that Maldives is also expanding its alert capabilities with the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) and cell broadcasting for swift, widespread warnings, including remote islands.

It is not just about sending warnings, It is about making sure those warnings are clear, understood, and acted upon by all segments of the population.

President Dr. Muizzu stressed

President concluded by calling for more international support in areas like marine forecasting and observation.

Early warning systems are an investment in livelihoods and prosperity. It is not only the right thing to do morally – it is also economically essential,

He added

At COP29, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is represents Maldives, addressing the unique climate challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) alongside a dedicated delegation.

This year’s event is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024.
