President Dr. Muizzu urges for global shift to low-carbon future at COP29
At COP29’s launch of the International Zero Carbon Island Cooperation Initiative, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu underscored the urgent need for global commitment to low-carbon development, stressing that it is no longer a choice but a necessity as the planet faces worsening climate impacts.
He expressed gratitude to China for its role in advancing sustainable policies, particularly recognizing President Xi Jinping’s leadership.
President Dr. Muizzu praised China’s climate efforts, calling its carbon neutrality target for 2060 an inspiring global benchmark.
He stressed the critical need for immediate and ambitious action to counter what he described as a “planet at a tipping point.”
Noting China’s progress in green energy, sustainable urban planning, and clean technology, he emphasized that these advancements demonstrate the potential of international collaboration on climate solutions.
The Zero Carbon Island Initiative, he stated, is a “hopeful step forward” for both the Maldives and the global community.
Highlighting the advocacy efforts of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), President Dr. Muizzu affirmed that vulnerable nations like the Maldives are determined to lead the way toward a sustainable future, instead of merely being victims of climate change.
He pointed to rising sea levels and extreme weather as reminders of the urgent need for proactive climate resilience.
President Dr. Muizzu also outlined ambitious goals for the Maldives, including meeting 33% of national electricity needs with renewable sources by 2028, a target that will shape the Maldives’ upcoming Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
He shared progress on renewable energy investments and a new permit for a 150 MW floating solar project, as well as plans for modular, low-emission housing.
President Dr. Muizzu called for united international action, urging COP29 countries to reach an agreement on climate finance and highlighting the economic opportunities in green technology.
Expressing confidence in the power of collaborative climate action, he concluded that initiatives like the Zero Carbon Island mark essential steps toward securing a sustainable future for all.
