President Dr. Muizzu criticizes arms supply to Israel, calls for global action at Riyadh Summit

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu delivered a strong statement at the Extraordinary Joint Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh on Monday, urging global powers to take decisive action in support of Palestine.

In his address, President Dr. Muizzu condemned the supply of arms to Israel, emphasizing that countries calling for peace should not simultaneously enable oppression through military support.

President highlighted the continued suffering of Palestinians, calling Israel’s actions a ‘brutal occupation’ that has led to ‘unimaginable deaths, destruction, and suffering.’

The president said 

He underscored that the recent surge in violence has brought tragic losses to Palestinian families, leaving countless children orphaned and their futures uncertain.

describing the devastation as a wound on humanity’s conscience.

Questioning the sincerity of nations who verbally support peace while enabling military escalation,

You cannot call for peace while supplying weapons of war and the means of oppression.

President Dr. Muizzu stated

He expressed concern that powerful nations, through their actions, signal a disregard for the value of Palestinian lives, noting, 

The actions of these nations demonstrate that they don’t even recognize that the lives of Palestinians are as valuable as the lives of other human beings.

President Dr. Muizzu also pointed to the role of veto power within the UN Security Council, stating that it has enabled certain countries to avoid accountability for their actions, while preventing meaningful resolutions that could alleviate Palestinian suffering.

expressing frustration at how these protections contribute to the steady flow of arms, thereby fueling the violence.

The President announced that the Maldives has filed a declaration with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to support South Africa’s case against Israel, aimed at holding Israel accountable under the Genocide Convention. He described this move as a critical step toward justice and stressed that ‘international law must not be selective.’

Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu reiterated the Maldives’ strong objection to Israel’s recent decision to dismantle the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides essential services to Palestinian refugees. “,” he said,

calling on nations to support UNRWA’s work financially.

President Muizzu began his speech by commending Saudi Arabia for its efforts to promote unity among Muslim nations and address global challenges faced by the Muslim world.

He commended Saudi’s efforts in forging a global allies for implementation of two-state solution to the Palestinian issue.
