Azeema named High Commissioner to India, Sareer as Ambassador to Saudi
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced key diplomatic appointments, naming Aishath Azeema as High Commissioner to India and Ahmed Sareer as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
Azeema, a seasoned diplomat, has previously served in various capacities, including as head of chancery at the Maldivian Embassy in India and, more recently, as ambassador to China, where she strengthened bilateral relations and coordinated COVID-19 support efforts.
After concluding her service in China in 2023, President Dr. Muizzu nominated her for the High Commissioner role in India, a decision that was subsequently endorsed by the People’s Majlis.
Sareer, who has been with the Foreign Ministry since 1986 and holds a Master’s degree in foreign affairs and trade from Monash University, Australia, was confirmed as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia with 86 votes in favor.
Sareer’s extensive diplomatic career includes appointments as High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Ambassador to the United States, and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he notably chaired the Alliance of Small Island States and advocated for the 1.5°C climate target in the Paris Agreement.
Following his role as Foreign Secretary in 2017, Sareer joined the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, where he served as Advisor and later Director of Asian Affairs in Saudi Arabia.
